Tim will take you through 5 to 6 white wines from around the world that he feels are great choices for the warmer spring and summer months. As always, Chef Crouse will have some lite bites for you to munch.

Having just returned from 18 months in the wine country of the central coast of California, Timothy Clune has returned to the DC area, and to Sotto Sopra, to share his passion for wine and food with all who are willing to listen. You can find Timothy at Sotto Sopra’s First Thursday wine tasting events, and throughout the month, roaming the dining room to help you select the perfect wine to compliment your meal.

Timothy grew up in restaurants along with his brother Christopher, also familiar to longtime Sotto Sopra regulars. Tim had a desire to learn all he could about food and wine alike and at the age of 21, he focused on wine service. He has worked with many famous chefs from around the globe and continually increasing his understanding of the world of wine by working in retail and wholesale environments.

Our wine director, Michael Mohammadi, just spent 10 days in Italy, roaming the Tuscan hills and valleys. He’ll be visiting a number of vineyards and tasting many wines – it’s a tough job but someone has to do it. Michael has directed us to set up June’s wine tasting based on a number of the wines he has tasted on his trip

It is with great pleasure that Sotto Sopra would like to introduce Michael Mohammadi as your host for this evening’s wine tasting. Michael is Sotto Sopra’s very own wine superman, by day he is a medical researcher working on his Phd in Physiology and at night, a food and wine journalist, check out his very popular http://www.foodandwineblog.com/.

For his first tasting at Sotto Sopra, Michael wants to take you on a tour of Italy through their wines from Tuscany, Piedmont, Friuli-Venezia Giulia as well as a selection from Southern Italy.

Come taste 7 Italian wines, meet the gregarious and knowledgeable Michael Mohammadi, and enjoy a couple lite bites during the tasting. Stay for dinner and pay ½ price for any bottle of wine sampled during that evenings tasting.


About Michael Mohammadi

Michael Mohammadi has a passion for cooking and once dreamed to graduate from culinary school. He keeps recipes simple and tries to highlight the flavors of the main ingredient. He loves the challenge of pairing the right wine with any dish.

His culinary influences are vast, ranging from German, to Persian (his heritage) to traditional American or Mediterranean. Michael would define his cooking style as “simple with a twist” and almost always make a dish with a wine pairing or experience in mind.

He has traveled Italy and has a love and passion for Italian wines. His other passions include writing, spending time with his three dogs, and watching the Lions, Red Wings, Tiger’s, or Michigan Football. He loves to run and hike and especially likes cold weather mountaineering and camping, as well as back country skiing.

First Thursday Wine Tasting Competition

Sotto Sopra’s First Thursday’s Wine Tasting Competition

5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

World-class wines (the kind that are hard-to-find and more expense to drink) do battle in a side-by-side blind tasting, the ultimate wine competition, and like any competition there will be a reigning champ.

The Rules

Three (3) world-class wines will square off and the winner will proceed to the next month’s first Thursday wine tasting to face two new challenging wines. All wines will be blind tasted, discussed, and your vote will determine the winner.

Why Blind Tasting?

We chose blind tasting so no national or varietal prejudice will come into play. The fun of tasting blind is assessing flavors and aromas in your glass and calling the wine based on the evidence you collect. An award will be presented to the participating taster who guesses closest to the identity of all three wines.

The Referee

Our sommelier, Chris Clune, will make the selection of these very expensive and hard-to-find wines and oversee the blind tasting.
